According to the Maine Department of Education, only 25% of students report regular engagement with environmental topics in their curriculum, underscoring a significant critical gap in understanding and appreciation for their surroundings. This disconnect is particularly concerning in rural areas, where opportunities to explore nature are abundant yet underutilized in educational settings.
Students in communities such as Aroostook County face additional challenges due to limited educational resources and programming. Schools often lack the funds to implement outdoor educational initiatives or incorporate technology that engages students in meaningful ways. Conversely, urban areas like Portland may provide more extensive programs, but still struggle with ensuring that all students receive comprehensive environmental education.
Our initiative seeks to address this barrier by implementing a nature photography program in Maine high schools. Participants will learn photography skills while exploring Maine’s diverse ecosystems, capturing the beauty that surrounds them and developing a deeper connection to their natural world.
