Summary

This funding opportunity supports graduate-level students and early-career researchers at nonprofit U.S. academic institutions who are deeply engaged in scientific research on aging biology. Designed to encourage innovation in understanding the mechanisms of aging, it aims to develop new knowledge and prepare scholars for longer-term research careers.

Eligible applicants include MD, DO, PhD, or combined-degree students who have completed at least two years of their doctoral or professional programs by the start of the award. Candidates must be in good academic standing, supported by a qualified faculty mentor, and cannot hold conflicting scholarships—though certain federal stipends (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOD) are permitted.

Each year, up to ten awards are made, with each recipient receiving $5,000 in funds dedicated strictly to research-related expenses. These may include lab materials, data collection tools, or protocol-specific expenses—but not overhead, indirect costs, or institutional fees.

The program operates on an annual cycle. Applications are invited in spring, submissions are reviewed via a competitive, scientific peer-review process, and awards are announced later in the year. Recipients must complete a final narrative and financial report within 90 days of the 12-month award period ending. Unspent funds must be returned unless a no-cost extension (up to one year) is granted.

By providing this targeted financial support, the scholarship helps bridge the gap between early scientific training and larger-scale research projects, contributing meaningfully to the field of aging biology. Scholars deepen their engagement in key research areas—such as cellular aging, stem cell function, genetic regulation, or neurobiology—strengthening their capacity to drive future discoveries.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals driven to explore the biology of aging through hands-on research. Awards are annual, funds are structured to support laboratory or related direct costs, and recipients emerge more prepared to pursue advanced, independent research in aging science.
