Latinx communities in Maine often experience challenges in finding culturally affirming spaces where they can explore and enjoy the outdoors. Many local organizations offering recreational programs do not incorporate or acknowledge the unique cultural backgrounds of Latinx individuals, resulting in a disconnect that inhibits participation. Additionally, limited transportation options can pose a significant barrier to accessing outdoor sites across the state.
The Nuestra Herencia Grant Program seeks to address these challenges by providing funding dedicated to developing an outdoor recreation initiative tailored for Latinx families in Maine. Grants of $5,000 to $100,000 will support programs that facilitate engagement with local natural spaces, promote culturally relevant activities, and encourage community bonding through outdoor experiences.
